Why Gen III splits the angle and Gen IV doesn’t. Gen III blocks use two bolt lengths — eight long 155.5 mm bolts (holes 1–8) and two short 101 mm bolts (holes 9–10) — so the short pair gets a smaller final angle (+50°) to reach the same clamp load. For 2004+, GM revised the block so all ten 11 mm bolts are the same 155.5 mm length, giving one uniform +70° final turn. Why the tightening sequence matters

The head gasket seals combustion, coolant and oil at once — clamp load has to land evenly.

An LS head gasket (MLS — multi-layer steel) seals high-pressure combustion gas in each cylinder and the coolant and oil passages between head and block. Run the ten 11 mm bolts through all their passes first, starting from the center pair and working outward, alternating side to side — the two short outer bolts (#9–10 on Gen III) end up last. How to torque LS head bolts, step by step

Clean, new bolts, light oil, then seat-and-angle.

  1. Fit NEW torque-to-yield head bolts — factory LS head bolts are single-use; reusing stretched bolts gives a false, low clamp load.

Lube changes the number. ARP torque is calibrated to the assembly lube — Ultra-Torque (current sheets) reads 70–80 ft-lb on the 11 mm, older moly sheets read 75 ft-lb, and 30-wt motor oil would need more.   • Reusing factory head bolts — LS factory bolts are torque-to-yield and single-use; reused bolts under-clamp the gasket.
  • Torquing to “65 ft-lb straight” — that’s the old pre-TTY method for older small-blocks; it is wrong for LS, which uses 22 ft-lb + angle.
