Lug nut torque is the one wheel spec you cannot guess at: too loose and the wheel works itself off, too tight and you stretch the studs or warp the rotor. Lug nut torque by vehicle type

Passenger cars generally run 80-100 ft-lbs. SUVs and crossovers sit higher at 90-120 ft-lbs. Half-ton and larger pickup trucks are higher again at 120-150 ft-lbs, and heavy-duty trucks can exceed that. Treat these as sanity-check ranges, not a substitute for the figure in your owner’s manual — within a single make the spec can change with the chassis, and alloy versus steel wheels can differ.

Common socket and thread sizes

The great majority of modern passenger vehicles use a 17mm, 19mm, or 21mm lug socket, with 22mm appearing on newer full-size trucks. Thread sizes cluster around M12x1.5, M12x1.25, and M14x1.5. Use a six-point impact-rated socket rather than a twelve-point chrome socket — twelve-point sockets round off lug nuts under an impact gun. A thin-wall socket matters on alloy wheels with recessed lug pockets.

The star pattern, and why a circle fails

Always tighten in a crisscross star pattern, never around the circle. Going around the circle pulls the wheel onto the hub unevenly, which cocks it a fraction of a degree off the hub face and shows up as a brake pulsation you will blame on the rotors. Work in two passes: snug every nut to roughly half spec in the star order, then bring each one to full spec in the same order.

Use a torque wrench, not the impact gun

An impact gun has no idea how tight it is. It is fine for spinning nuts down, but the final pass belongs to a calibrated click-type torque wrench. Torque to the dry spec with clean, dry threads — never grease or anti-seize a lug stud unless the manufacturer explicitly calls for it, because lubricated threads reach a far higher clamp load at the same wrench reading and will stretch the stud.

Re-torque after 50-100 miles

Re-check the nuts after the first 50-100 miles of driving following any wheel removal. Fresh assemblies settle as the wheel seats fully against the hub, and nuts that read correct in the driveway can be measurably loose after a heat cycle. This matters most on alloy wheels, on newly installed wheel studs, and after a tire shop visit.

Seat type has to match the wheel

Lug nuts come in conical (60-degree taper), ball/radius, and flat washer seats, and the nut seat must match the wheel seat. A conical nut in a ball-seat wheel contacts on a thin ring instead of the full seat face, will not hold clamp load, and works loose no matter how accurately you torque it. Check the seat shape whenever you change wheels or buy aftermarket nuts.
