Toyota HiLux Wheel Nut Torque Specs

By WhatSizeBoltEdited 5 min read

Toyota's 2023 owner's manual gives 105 Nm for every HiLux wheel; a separate service bulletin lists 121/152 Nm for 4x2 models only. What each source covers, and what to check on your own vehicle.

Toyota HiLux Wheel Nut Torque Specs

Toyota publishes two different HiLux wheel-nut torque documents: a 2023 owner’s manual and a separate service bulletin. Here is what each one covers, so you can tell which applies to your HiLux.

Quick answer: Toyota’s 2023 HiLux owner’s manual (covers both 4WD and Pre Runner 2WD models) gives 105 Nm (10.7 kgf·m, 77 ft·lbf) for every wheel it lists — 16×6J, 17×6J, 17×7½J and 18×7½J — steel or aluminium, including the spare. A separate Toyota bulletin (AIM 005 469-5) instead splits the figure by drivetrain: 105 Nm for 4x4, but 121 Nm alloy / 152 Nm steel for 4x2 — which conflicts with the owner’s manual for 2WD (Pre Runner) models. If you drive a 2WD HiLux, check your own glovebox manual before using 121/152 Nm.

The owner’s manual and the service bulletin do not agree for 2WD models.

These two Toyota documents disagree for 2WD models: The owner’s manual makes no drivetrain split — it gives 105 Nm for every wheel on every model it covers, including the Pre Runner (2WD). The bulletin instead gives the 2WD (“Hilux 4x2”) a higher, wheel-material-specific figure. We cannot resolve which one your particular vehicle should use — if you drive a 2WD HiLux, check your own owner’s manual before torquing to 121 or 152 Nm.

Which model do you have?

Toyota identifies drivetrain inside the model code itself, not by trim name.

Check the manufacturer’s label on the left door pillar. The manual’s model code reads GUN1∗6, GUN1∗5 or TGN1∗6 — the ∗ is the driving-system digit: 2 for 4WD, 3 for Pre Runner (2WD). If your code doesn’t follow that pattern, this European manual doesn’t describe your vehicle — use your own glovebox manual instead.

Tightening the wheel nuts

Steps and warnings taken from Toyota’s own owner’s manual.

  1. Remove dirt or foreign matter from the wheel and hub contact surfaces before fitting the wheel.
  2. Loosely tighten each wheel nut by hand by approximately the same amount.
  3. Steel wheels: tighten until the tapered portion of the nut contacts the wheel seat. Aluminium wheels: tighten until the washer contacts the wheel.
  4. Lower the vehicle, then tighten securely two or three times in the order shown in the illustration, using a wheel nut wrench, to 105 Nm.
  5. Fit the tapered end of the nut inward — Toyota warns that a nut fitted the wrong way round can break the wheel and come loose while driving.
  6. Never use oil or grease on the wheel bolts or nuts — Toyota warns it can cause the nuts to over-tighten or work loose.
  7. On aluminium wheels, check the nuts are still tight after driving 1,600 km (1,000 miles).

What we couldn’t confirm: Toyota’s 2023 owner’s manual and the AIM 005 469-5 bulletin were both reached and used above — what we could not confirm is which one an Australian-delivered 2WD HiLux actually ships with: the Australian-printed HiLux manual sits behind a login on toyotamanuals.com.au and was not checked. Thread pitch (commonly cited as M12 × 1.5) and socket size (commonly 21mm) are stated in neither Toyota document we reached, so treat them as unconfirmed and check your own nut.

Recommended Tool · break the nuts loose

Deep impact socket set

Breaks the nuts loose and seats fully on a HiLux wheel nut without rounding it off.

Frequently asked questions

What is the wheel nut torque on a Toyota HiLux?

105 Nm for every wheel, steel or alloy, per Toyota’s 2023 owner’s manual. A separate Toyota service bulletin instead gives Hilux 4x2 121 Nm alloy / 152 Nm steel — the two documents disagree for 2WD models, so check your own glovebox manual.

How do I know if my HiLux is 4WD or Pre Runner (2WD)?

Check the model code on the manufacturer’s label on the left door pillar: it reads GUN1∗6, GUN1∗5 or TGN1∗6, where ∗ is 2 for 4WD or 3 for Pre Runner (2WD). If your code doesn’t match that pattern, this European manual doesn’t describe your vehicle.

Bottom line: Toyota’s 2023 owner’s manual gives 105 Nm for every HiLux wheel, steel or alloy, tightened two or three times in the order shown, tapered end inward, with no oil or grease on the threads. If you drive a 2WD HiLux, or your model code doesn’t match the manual’s format, confirm against your own glovebox manual before using the bulletin’s 121/152 Nm.
