Generator Bolt Torque Specs

Spark plug, cylinder head, flywheel nut, and oil drain plug torque for portable generator engines by brand, including Honda EU and GX series and the Generac GP line. Generator engines run long duty cycles at constant load, which makes correct fastener torque more important than on equipment that runs for twenty minutes at a time.

Torque specs by generator brand

Honda EU2000i and EU2200i (GX100/GXR120, small M10 plug): spark plug 9 ft-lbs (12 N·m), head bolts 106 in-lbs (M6), flywheel nut 47 ft-lbs (64 N·m), oil drain plug 13 ft-lbs. Honda EU3000iS and GX160-GX200 frame engines (M14 plug): spark plug 13 ft-lbs (18 N·m), head bolts 18 ft-lbs (M8, 24 N·m), flywheel nut 55 ft-lbs (75 N·m), oil drain plug 13 ft-lbs. These Honda figures aside, the rest of this page's brand table is a general reference range, not a manufacturer figure — see below for what Champion and Generac manuals actually print. Torque head bolts in a cross pattern in stages rather than in one pull, and let the engine cool completely first.

Why generator fasteners loosen

A generator under load runs at a fixed engine speed for hours, which puts a narrow, constant vibration frequency into the whole assembly — quite different from the variable load a mower sees. Mounting bolts, muffler fasteners and control panel screws are the usual casualties. Check them at every oil change rather than only when something rattles.

What Champion and Generac actually publish

Champion's 8 current portable/inverter manuals and Generac's GP5500E, GP6500E-GP8000E and iQ3500 manuals print zero fastener torque values — only a spark plug gap, and on some models an oil-drain socket size. The one tier that DOES publish torque is Generac's 9-22kW home-standby line (including the 22kW/999cc GTH999): spark plug 25 N·m (printed as both 18.4 ft-lb and 18 ft-lb in two separate steps of the same manual), valve cover screws 60 in-lb (11-22kW) or 80 in-lb (9kW), and a rocker-arm jam nut that steps from 53 in-lb (9kW) to 174 in-lb (16-22kW). No manual in either brand's lineup prints a "rotor bolt" torque, despite it being a real search.
