Lawn Mower Bolt Torque Specs
Blade bolt torque for walk-behind lawn mowers by engine brand — Briggs & Stratton, Honda, Kohler, Tecumseh, Toro/MTD and Craftsman/Husqvarna — plus what to check before you put the blade back on. The blade bolt is a safety fastener, so this is one to torque rather than guess.
Blade bolt torque by engine brand
Briggs & Stratton 450-575 Series (140-190cc): 30-35 ft-lbs — note some models use a left-hand thread, so check rotation direction first. Honda GCV160 and GCV190: 40-50 ft-lbs, standard right-hand thread, and replace the blade bolt if it is damaged rather than reusing it. Kohler XT650, XT675 and XT7: 35-43 ft-lbs; overtightening cracks the adapter. Tecumseh LEV100, LEVA and TVS115: 30-35 ft-lbs, and inspect the older-design adapter for wear. Toro and MTD 140-160cc OEM engines: 35-50 ft-lbs depending on deck size — use the torque printed on the model label where one is shown. Craftsman and Husqvarna 140-190cc: 35-50 ft-lbs, though most use a Briggs or Kohler engine, so defer to the engine brand spec.
Check the adapter, not just the bolt
A blade that keeps coming loose is usually a worn blade adapter or a bent crankshaft, not an under-torqued bolt. Inspect the adapter keyway and the blade seating surface every time the blade is off. A cracked adapter will let the blade shift under load no matter how accurately you torque the bolt, and that is how blades come off decks.
Torque wrench, not the impact gun
Blade bolts sit in soft aluminium or thin steel adapters and strip easily. Use a torque wrench for the final pull, hold the blade with a block of wood rather than your hand, and wear gloves. Re-check the bolt after the first hour of cutting following any blade change.
