Mower Deck Spindle Bolt Torque Chart
OEM-cited spindle nut and spindle housing bolt torque for Toro, eXmark, Ariens, and Husqvarna decks — a different fastener from the blade bolt, and one manuals print in the same table constantly. Also lists the manuals we read that print no spindle torque at all (including John Deere decks whose only printed sheave torque is for the idler/tension-arm hardware, not the spindle), and the brands not yet checked.
Spindle bolt vs. spindle nut vs. blade bolt
- Spindle housing mounting bolt (or tapping screw) — bolts the spindle assembly/housing itself to the underside of the deck. This is what most readers mean by "deck spindle torque."
- Spindle nut (or spindle pulley/sheave nut) — retains the drive pulley on top of the spindle shaft, where the deck belt wraps around it. A different fastener from the housing bolt, on the same spindle.
- Blade bolt (or blade nut) — holds the blade to the BOTTOM of the spindle shaft. Already covered, model by model, on this site's mower blade bolt torque pages — not duplicated here.
Manuals frequently print two or three of these in the same torque table or the same repair step, which is exactly how the wrong number ends up on the wrong bolt — every "nearby" note below flags exactly that mix-up risk, including belt-tensioner idler sheaves that sit right next to the real spindle in the same diagram.
Published spindle torque, by brand
Every row below is a real figure quoted from a manufacturer service or operator's manual, confirmed against the source diagram — not just the torque-table text.
| Brand | Model | Fastener | Torque | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toro | TimeCutter (42/50/54/60 in. decks; models 74685–75760) Stamped and fabricated decks, per the Service Manual |
Spindle assembly bolt (4× screws per spindle) | 19.5–22.5 N·m — do not exceed 22.5 N·m | TIMECUTTER Service Manual (Form No. 3433-938 Rev A, p.7-11): “Install the spindle assembly. Install the 4 (1/2 inch) screws securing spindle to the deck assembly. Torque screws to 19.5–22.5 N • m (175–225 in-lb).” ⚠️ The same manual’s belt-cover-bolt step (a different fastener) prints the identical 19.5–22.5 N·m as "175–200 in-lb", not "175–225 in-lb" — 22.5 N·m only converts to ~199 in-lb, so the manual’s own in-lb conversion is inconsistent between the two rows. Trust the N·m figure and stop at 22.5 N·m; the 225 in-lb upper bound printed for this row is the less reliable of the two units. |
| Toro | TimeCutter (42/50/54/60 in. decks; models 74685–75760) Stamped and fabricated decks, per the Service Manual |
Spindle pulley/sheave nut (15/16 in. nut) | 67.5–88 N·m (50–65 ft-lb) | TIMECUTTER Service Manual (Form No. 3433-938 Rev A, p.7-11): “Install the 15/16 inch nut securing the spindle to the spindle shaft. Torque nut to 67.5–88 N • m (50–65 ft-lb).” |
| Exmark | Lazer Z AS (52"/60"/72" decks, SN 670,000+) A different model line from the Lazer Z X/LZE/LZS/LZX covered on the blade-bolt page |
Cutter Housing Spindle Nut | 140–145 ft-lb (190–197 N·m) | Lazer Z AS Operator’s Manual (Part No. 109-6447 Rev A, p.14): “Cutter Housing Spindle Nut ..................................... 140-145 ft-lbs. (190-197 N-m)” ⚠️ The same Torque Requirements table lists the Blade Mounting Bolt at 55–60 ft-lb (75–81 N·m) right next to this row — the two are easy to swap by accident; see the eXmark blade-bolt page for that figure, not this one. It also lists "Engine Deck/Front Frame Mount Bolts" at 30–35 ft-lb — that is chassis hardware (the platform under the engine, bolted to the tractor’s front frame), not the cutter/mower deck this page is about. |
| Ariens | IKON / IKON ONYX / IKON SELECT (42/48/52/60 in. decks) Figure is from the Service Manual only — the companion consumer Operator’s Manual for the same model prints no torque values at all |
Spindle housing mounting bolt (4× tapping screws per spindle) | 37–43 N·m (330–380 lb-in) | IKON Service Manual (09690530A • 7/25, p.EN-74): “Reinstall spindle on upper deck and secure with four new tapping screws from below deck. • Torque tapping screws to 37 N•m – 43 N•m (330 lb-in – 380 lb-in). DO NOT overtighten.” |
| Husqvarna | MZ54 | Spindle/deck pulley bolt ("Deck pulley bolts") | 150 ft-lb (203 N·m) | MZ54 Operator’s Manual (2612 - 001 - 15.11.2024, p.28): “Deck pulley bolts, ft-lb/Nm 150/203” ⚠️ This manual’s own BLADE bolt figure (a different fastener from the deck-pulley bolt above) conflicts with itself — see the callout below. |
Flagged: Husqvarna MZ54's own manual disagrees on the blade bolt
The procedure text (p.19, step 3) says "Torque the bolt to 45–55 ft-lb / 122 Nm"; the Torque Specifications table (p.28) says "Blade bolts, ft-lb/Nm 90/122" for the same fastener. 122 Nm is common to both, but the ft-lb figures disagree (45–55 vs. 90) and the manual does not say which is correct. Confirm the real figure with a Husqvarna dealer before torquing — do not average or guess between the two.
MZ54 Operator’s Manual (2612 - 001 - 15.11.2024, p.19 & p.28): “Blade bolts, ft-lb/Nm 90/122 | (procedure, p.19): "3. Attach the blade bolt. Torque the bolt to 45–55 ft-lb / 122 Nm."”
Husqvarna blade bolt torque page →Manuals we read that print no spindle torque
These manufacturers' service/operator's manuals were located and read cover-to-cover for spindle hardware. None of them print a torque figure for the spindle housing or spindle sheave itself — that is an honest absence, not a gap in the search. John Deere is the largest entry here: Deere's X330–X394 and D100–D170 manuals print a sheave torque in the deck procedure (70.5 N·m and 47 N·m), but the diagrams show those are the idler/tension-arm sheaves, not the spindle. Use your model's service manual or ask a dealer for the exact spindle figure.
| Brand | Model | What the manual says | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| John Deere | X330, X350, X354, X370, X380, X384, X390, X394 Select Series | No torque is printed anywhere in this belt-replacement procedure for the pulley mounted directly on the blade spindle shaft. ⚠️ Deere’s manual prints a 70.5 N·m (52 lb-ft) "sheave hardware" torque in this procedure — it is NOT the spindle pulley: the diagram it comes from (MXT014289) shows the two torqued (C) callouts landing on a belt tensioner/idler bracket in the middle of the deck, not on either of the two spindle housings, which have no callout touching them in this procedure at all. A second figure on the same page, 27 N·m (20 lb-ft), is the separate sheave-shield belt-cover nuts — also not spindle hardware. |
Operator’s Manual: X330, X350, X354, X370, X380, X384, X390 & X394 Select Series Tractors (OMM174375, p.60): “11. Tighten sheave hardware (C) to specification. Sheave Hardware — Torque . . . . . . . . . . . . 70.5 N·m (52 lb·ft)” |
| John Deere | D100, D110, D120, D130, D140, D150, D160, D170 (100 Series lawn tractors) | The only spindle-adjacent procedure in this manual is a spindle-BRAKE distance adjustment (a mechanical clearance, not a bolt torque) — no torque figure is printed for spindle housing/mounting hardware anywhere. ⚠️ The same manual’s 107 cm (42 in.) deck belt-replacement procedure prints 47 N·m (35 lb-ft) for "sheaves (C)" — the diagram (MX25906) shows the (C) arrows landing on two small pulleys mounted on a bracket between the two spindle housings, not on the spindle-mounted pulleys themselves (which sit unlabeled under the "EDGE 42" branded caps on either side). Do not read 47 N·m as a spindle-pulley torque; it is idler/tension-bracket hardware, the same mis-attribution trap as the X330–X394 case above. |
Operator’s Manual: D100, D120, D130, D140, D150, D160 & D170 Lawn Tractors (OMGX24147, p.38): “4. Measure distance from spindle brake bracket (B) to nut (C) on end of brake rod. • Bracket to nut distance should be: 2 - 3 mm (0.08 - 0.12 in).” |
| John Deere | Z335E, Z335M, Z345M, Z345R, Z355E, Z355R, Z375R ZTrak | The manual never prints a torque for the fixed blade-spindle sheaves themselves on this deck. ⚠️ It does print a 47 N·m (35 lb-ft) sheave nut/carriage-bolt torque — but that is the belt-tensioner IDLER pulley on the tension arm, not the fixed spindle sheave, and the manual itself distinguishes the two components. |
Operator’s Manual: Z335E, Z335M, Z345M, Z345R, Z355E, Z355R & Z375R ZTrak Zero-Turn Mowers (OMGX26531, p.43): “Sheave Nut—Torque. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 47 N·m (35 lb·ft)” |
| John Deere | X570, X580, X584, X590 Select Series | No torque is printed for the spindle sheave itself on these decks: the belt-replacement procedure for the 48A/54A decks removes the belt from the deck sheaves without disturbing the spindle sheave fasteners — unlike the X330–X394 42A-deck procedure, which does print a sheave torque (also not the spindle — see above). Only the sheave-shield cover-nut torque is printed here. ⚠️ The 27 N·m (20 lb-ft) figure printed on this page is the sheave-SHIELD cover nut (belt-cover hardware), not the spindle sheave itself. |
Operator’s Manual: X570, X580, X584 & X590 Select Series Tractors (OMM174377, p.58): “Install Sheave Shields ... Tighten nuts to specification. Sheave Hardware — Torque . . . . . . . . . . .27 N·m (20 lb·ft)” |
| John Deere | S240 | Only a generic "lubricate mower spindles and pivot points" maintenance line appears — no torque spec for spindle housing/mounting hardware anywhere in this operator’s manual. | Operator’s Manual: S240 Riding Lawn Tractor (OMGX26096, Issue H5, p.48): “Lubricate mower spindles and pivot points.” |
| Kubota | RCK60B-22BX, RCK54-22BX and ZD221 (RCK48P/RCK54P decks) | Both manuals illustrate the "Spindle holder" as a labeled part of the blade-mounting stack but never print a torque spec for the spindle holder’s own mounting bolts — only for the blade bolts and a nearby gearbox bracket (both different fasteners). ⚠️ Both manuals DO print 77.6–90.2 N·m (57.1–66.5 ft-lb) for the "right hand bracket which mounts the gear box to the mower deck" — a drivetrain bracket next to the spindle, explicitly not the spindle holder itself. |
Rotary Mower Operator’s Manual: Models RCK60B-22BX and RCK54-22BX (unstamped (Kubota Corporation), p.48 (printed)): “(1) Spindle holder (2) Blade (3) 2-Cup washers (4) Lock washer (5) Bolt (6) Spindle guard” |
| Ferris | IS800Z, ISX800Z and SRS Z1 | The Spindle Service Parts page carries only the generic boilerplate "use the standard torque specifications" — pointing at a generic bolt-grade-by-size chart, not a spindle-specific figure. This is not a silent gap: the same parts manual DOES print component-specific torque overrides elsewhere on this exact page pattern — clutch mounting bolt 65 ft-lb, engine mounting bolt 50 ft-lb, transmission mounting bolts 17–30 ft-lb — it simply never gives the spindle assembly one. | Parts Manual: ISX800 Series w/ 61" Mower Deck (ISX800KAVE2661) (Mfg. No. 5901745, p.60 (Spindle Service Parts); Torque Specification Chart p.70): “Spindle Service Parts - 5061096 Note: Unless noted otherwise, use the standard torque specifications” |
| Husqvarna | TS 140X (42) | The mandrel is named several times in this manual — belt-routing steps, blade-alignment ("the star (D) on the mandrel assembly (E)"), and troubleshooting ("A blade mandrel is frozen → Replace the blade mandrel") — but no torque figure is printed for the mandrel HOUSING’s own mounting hardware in any of those passages; the only torque figure near any of them is the separate blade bolt (45–55 ft-lb), a different fastener. | TS 140X (42) Operator’s Manual (2784 - 001 - 05.11.2025, p.28): “the star (D) on the mandrel assembly (E).” |
| Husqvarna | TS 275XD (48) | The belt-service procedure names the mandrel-housing cover fastener but gives no numeric torque, only "tighten with fasteners" — no spindle/mandrel torque number appears anywhere else in the manual. | TS 275XD (48) Operator’s Manual (2799 - 001 - 14.11.2025, p.30): “Put the mandrel covers on the two mandrel housings and tighten with fasteners.” |
| Husqvarna | Z248FX | This manual never uses the word "mandrel" or "spindle" at all, and prints no torque figure for deck spindle/mandrel hardware anywhere — but it is not silent on torque generally: it also prints a front wheel nut/bolt torque (50 ft-lb/67.8 Nm), a blade bolt torque (60–81 Nm), and a spark plug torque (16 lb-ft/22 Nm). None of those three is the spindle. | Z248FX Operator’s Manual (2599 - 001 - 07.11.2024, p.27): “Spark plug torque, lb-ft / Nm 16 / 22” |
| Scag | Tiger Cat, Turf Tiger, SWZU, SWZV | No spindle mounting/rebuild procedure or torque figure appears in any of these operator’s manuals — the spindle is parts-diagram only, and every troubleshooting entry for a bent or incorrectly-mounted spindle refers the operator to an authorized Scag dealer instead of giving a spec. ⚠️ Two OTHER torque figures do appear in these manuals, but not for the spindle: 39 ft-lbs for the "Custom-Cut Baffle" mounting hardware (a deck accessory bracket) and 10 ft-lbs for the Dump Valve Control Levers (hydraulic free-wheel control, unrelated to the deck). |
Tiger Cat Operator’s Manual (Part No. 03361, p.25 (pdf)): “Mounting of spindle incorrect See your authorized SCAG dealer” |
| Gravely | Pro-Turn 48/52/60 | Neither the Owner/Operator Manual nor the companion Parts Manual prints a spindle housing removal/torque procedure or any bolt torque figure for it — the Parts Manual is parts lists only, with no torque column at all. | Pro-Turn Owner/Operator Manual (04798600 • 7/14, p.EN-41): “Cast Iron Deck Spindles ... 3 Years for all users including Commercial.” |
Not checked this pass: Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Craftsman, MTD
Every manual host tried for this family — cubcadet.com, troybilt.com, mtdparts.com/genuinefactoryparts.com, plus retail mirrors (Jack’s Small Engines, RepairClinic, Lowe’s, Tractor Supply, Home Depot) — returned a Cloudflare/Akamai block or bot-check this pass. apps.mtdproducts.com PDFs are directly fetchable by URL but are unbranded inside, so a form-number-to-model mapping is also needed before they can be cited. Use your model's service manual or a dealer for these brands until a manual can be sourced.
Spindle bolt vs. spindle nut vs. blade bolt
The spindle housing mounting bolt secures the spindle assembly to the underside of the deck. The spindle nut (or spindle pulley/sheave nut) retains the drive pulley on top of the same spindle shaft. The blade bolt holds the blade to the bottom of the shaft and is covered separately on the mower blade bolt torque pages. Manuals print two or three of these fasteners — plus nearby idler-sheave and cover-nut hardware — in the same torque table constantly, which is how the wrong number ends up on the wrong bolt.
Published figures
Toro TimeCutter: spindle assembly bolt 19.5–22.5 N·m (do not exceed 22.5 N·m — the manual’s own in-lb conversion for this row is inconsistent with a sibling row) and spindle pulley/sheave nut 67.5–88 N·m (50–65 ft-lb). eXmark Lazer Z AS: Cutter Housing Spindle Nut 140–145 ft-lb (190–197 N·m). Ariens IKON/IKON ONYX/IKON SELECT: spindle housing mounting bolt 37–43 N·m (330–380 lb-in). Husqvarna MZ54: spindle/deck pulley bolt 150 ft-lb (203 N·m).
Flagged: Husqvarna MZ54 blade-bolt conflict
The MZ54 manual's own blade-bolt figure — a different fastener from the deck-pulley bolt above — disagrees with itself: the procedure text says 45–55 ft-lb/122 N·m, the torque spec table says 90 ft-lb/122 N·m for the same bolt. The manual does not say which is correct; confirm with a Husqvarna dealer before torquing.
Manuals that print no spindle torque
John Deere X330–X394 and D100–D170 manuals each print a sheave torque in the deck procedure (70.5 N·m and 47 N·m), but the diagrams show it is the idler/tension-arm sheaves, not the spindle; Deere’s Z335E–Z375R ZTrak, X570–X590, and S240 print no spindle figure at all. Kubota RCK60B-22BX/RCK54-22BX and ZD221 (the spindle holder specifically), Ferris IS800Z/ISX800Z and SRS Z1, Husqvarna TS140X, TS275XD, and Z248FX, Scag Tiger Cat, Turf Tiger, SWZU, and SWZV, and Gravely Pro-Turn 48/52/60 were all read cover-to-cover for spindle hardware and print no torque figure for it either — an honest absence, not a gap in the search. Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Craftsman, and MTD manuals could not be reached this pass (every host tried returned a Cloudflare/Akamai block).
