Go-Kart Engine Bolt & Torque Specs
OEM-referenced torque specs and fastener sizes for go-kart and mini bike engines: Kawasaki FJ180V and the Harbor Freight Predator 212cc, a Honda GX200-pattern clone. Covers clutch bolts, spark plugs, and head bolts.
Clutch and drive bolt torque
The centrifugal clutch or torque-converter driver bolts onto the crankshaft taper and typically torques to 25-35 ft-lb on the Predator 212cc and comparable GX200-pattern engines. Under-torque and the clutch works loose under load, stripping the crankshaft keyway. Always use the OEM crankshaft key; a worn or oversized key is the most common cause of a loose clutch on a go-kart engine.
Spark plug and head bolt torque
Spark plug torque is 15-18 ft-lb on both the Kawasaki FJ180V and the Predator 212cc. Head bolt torque on the Predator 212cc (Honda GX200 pattern) is typically 16-18 ft-lb in a criss-cross sequence; the Kawasaki FJ180V head bolt spec is close, at 15-18 ft-lb.
Governor and carburetor hardware
Governor arm clamp bolts are light, around 6-8 ft-lb, and easily stripped if over-torqued. Loosen this bolt only when adjusting top speed, then re-torque carefully. Carburetor mounting bolts on both engines are 15-22 in-lb (about 1.5-2 ft-lb); overtightening warps the carb body gasket surface and causes vacuum leaks.
