Honda Mower Blade Bolt Torque Specs
Honda publishes one blade-bolt torque across its entire gas walk-behind line — 36–43 ft-lb (49–59 N·m) — the identical figure in every HRX, HRN, HRR, HRS, HRC and HRB owner's manual we pulled, from a 2001 HRB216 manual through current-production HRX217/HRN216/HRR216/HRS216. The twin-blade HRX217 and HRB216 decks torque both the upper and lower "MicroCut" blades to that same spec, not a lower per-blade figure. Honda states the blade bolt by diameter and length — 10 x 25 mm on most residential decks, 10 x 20 mm on the HRX217HZA and HRC216PDA — but never publishes a thread pitch.
What torque should I use on a Honda blade bolt?
Honda blade bolt torque is typically 36–43 ft-lb (49–59 N·m) on a 14 mm (6-point) socket. Threadlocker: Not called for in the Honda owner's manuals cited below. Always confirm the exact figure for your specific model — deck design, blade thickness, and spindle stack-up move the spec by 10–20 ft-lb between models in the same brand line.
Honda HRX217VKA (Twin-Blade "MicroCut" Self-Propelled) blade bolt torque
36–43 ft-lb (49–59 N·m) on a 14 mm (6-point) socket with a 10 × 25 mm bolt. Honda blade bolt P/N 90105-VA3-J01. Owner's manual 00X31VH7N071 (models HRX217VKA/K1-K6/VLA/VYA/HYA), p.11: "Remove the two blade bolts with a 14 mm (6 point) socket wrench" and "Tighten the blade bolts with a torque wrench to the specified torque. Use a wooden block to prevent the blades from turning when tightening the bolts... Blade bolt torque: 36 ~ 43 ft-lb (49 ~ 59 N·m)." Identical wording confirmed verbatim in three more HRX217VKA manual revisions (00X31VH7N082, 00X31VH7W003, 00X31VH7W004). Twin blade — upper and lower share this one spec. Thread pitch is not stated.
Honda HRX217HZA (Self-Propelled, Electric-Start) blade bolt torque
36–43 ft-lb (49–59 N·m) on a 14 mm (6-point) socket with a 10 × 20 mm bolt. Honda blade bolt P/N 90105-960-710 — shorter than the 90105-VA3-J01 bolt used on HRX217VKA. Owner's manual 00X31VH7W604, p.12: "Remove the two blade bolts with a 14 mm (6 point) socket wrench" and "...torque. Use a wooden block to prevent the blades from turning when tightening the bolts... Blade bolt torque: 36 ~ 43 ft-lb (49 ~ 59 N·m)." Same torque as HRX217VKA despite the different bolt part number and 10x20mm vs 10x25mm length. Thread pitch is not stated.
Honda HRN216VKA (Mulching, Single Blade) blade bolt torque
36–43 ft-lb (49–59 N·m) on a 14 mm (6-point) socket with a 10 × 25 mm bolt. Honda blade bolt P/N 90105-VA3-J01. Owner's manual 00X31VR8B104 (models HRN216VKA/PKA), p.12: "Remove the blade bolts with a 14 mm (6 point) socket wrench" and "Tighten the blade bolts with a torque wrench to the specified torque. Use a wooden block to prevent the blades from turning when tightening the bolts... Blade bolt torque: 36 ~ 43 ft-lb (49 ~ 59 N·m)." Identical value confirmed verbatim in the sibling HRN216VLA manual (00X31VR8B203, p.12). Single-blade mulching deck. Thread pitch is not stated.
Honda HRR216VKA (Single Blade, Rear Bag/Mulch) blade bolt torque
36–43 ft-lb (49–59 N·m) on a 14 mm (6-point) socket with a 10 × 25 mm bolt. Honda blade bolt P/N 90105-VA3-J01. Owner's manual 00X31VL0V050 (serial MZCG 9349371-9999999), p.11: "Remove the two blade bolts with a 14 mm (6 point) socket wrench" and "...block to prevent the blades from turning when tightening the bolts... Blade bolt torque: 36 ~ 43 ft-lb (49 ~ 59 N·m)." Identical value confirmed verbatim across the earlier 00X31VL0N030 revision and the combined HRR216/HRS216 manual 00X31VL0N081. Thread pitch is not stated.
Honda HRS216VKA (Single Blade, Side-Discharge) blade bolt torque
36–43 ft-lb (49–59 N·m) on a 14 mm (6-point) socket with a 10 × 25 mm bolt. Honda blade bolt P/N 90105-VA3-J01. Owner's manual 00X31VG3L070 (serial MZBZ 6460001-9999999), p.9: "Remove the two blade bolts with a 14 mm (6 point) socket wrench" and "...torque. Use a wooden block to prevent the blades from turning when tightening the bolts... Blade bolt torque: 36 ~ 43 ft-lb (49 ~ 59 N·m)." Same value also present in the combined HRR216/HRS216 manual 00X31VL0N081. Thread pitch is not stated.
Honda HRC216PDA (Commercial Walk-Behind) blade bolt torque
36–43 ft-lb (49–59 N·m) on a 14 mm (6-point) socket. Honda blade bolt P/N 90105-960-710 (2 bolts required; dimensions not given in this manual). Owner's manual 00X31VK66324, p.12: "Remove the two blade bolts with a 14 mm (6 point) socket" and "...tighten the blade bolts with a torque wrench to the specified torque... Blade bolt torque: 36 ~ 43 ft-lb (49 ~ 59 N·m)." Same torque as the residential HRN/HRR/HRS/HRX lines despite the commercial-deck part number. Thread pitch is not stated.
Honda HRB216TXA (Legacy Twin-Blade, ~2001) blade bolt torque
36–43 ft-lb (49–59 N·m) on a 14 mm socket. Oldest manual sourced (2001, 31VE2652). No blade-bolt part number is listed in this manual's parts pages — left blank rather than guessing. p.35: "Remove the two blade bolts with a 14 mm socket wrench. Use a wooden block to prevent the blades from turning when removing the bolts" and "Tighten the blade bolts with a torque wrench. Use a wooden block to prevent the blades from turning when tightening the bolts... Blade bolt torque: 36 ~ 43 ft-lb; 5.0 ~ 6.0 kg-m (49 ~ 59 N·m)." The only manual in this set to also give a kg-m figure. Twin blade (upper+lower); bolt dimensions are not stated. Confirms Honda has used this same 36-43 ft-lb spec across its walk-behind gas mower line for 20+ years.
Pro tip for Honda blade service
Honda's manuals: "Inspect the blade bolts for any signs of damage or looseness. If they are damaged, they must be replaced" — a damaged bolt gets a new Honda Genuine bolt, not a reused one. When tightening, "Use a wooden block to prevent the blades from turning when tightening the bolts" (the HRN216 manual instead has you wear thick leather gloves and hold the blade by hand). Remove the bolts first with a 14 mm (6-point) socket wrench.
Step-by-step Honda blade-bolt reinstall
Disconnect the spark plug, engage parking brake, tip the mower (carb-side up). Block the blade with a 2×4 — never your hand. Use a 1/2" drive breaker bar with a 6-point socket. Clean threads with brake cleaner. No threadlocker needed unless your model manual specifies it. Torque in one smooth pull with a calibrated torque wrench. Re-check after first hour of cutting.
