Seized or stuck fasteners

Patience and penetrant beat brute force — which only rounds the head or snaps the bolt.

  1. Soak it in a quality penetrant (PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench, Kroil); overnight is best, and reapply.
  2. Shock and work it — nudge tighter before loosening, use a 6-point socket, steady pressure not jerks.
  3. Add heat — warm the nut (not the surrounding part) with a torch; thermal expansion cracks the bond.
  4. Step up the chemistry — stronger penetrants or a rust converter for badly corroded threads.

Stripped or cross-threaded threads

If the bolt spins without tightening, the threads are gone — chasing won’t bring them back.

Can I just retap a stripped hole?
