Seized or stuck fasteners
Patience and penetrant beat brute force — which only rounds the head or snaps the bolt.
- Soak it in a quality penetrant (PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench, Kroil); overnight is best, and reapply.
- Shock and work it — nudge tighter before loosening, use a 6-point socket, steady pressure not jerks.
- Add heat — warm the nut (not the surrounding part) with a torch; thermal expansion cracks the bond.
- Step up the chemistry — stronger penetrants or a rust converter for badly corroded threads.

Penetrating oil
The first move on any seized fastener. Soak, wait, reapply — it saves far more bolts than a longer breaker bar ever will.
Stripped or cross-threaded threads
If the bolt spins without tightening, the threads are gone — chasing won’t bring them back.
- Minor damage — a thread chaser or file cleans up existing threads without cutting metal.
- Moderate damage — a tap (female) or die (male) recuts the thread; back out often to clear chips.
- Stripped female threads — a thread insert (Heli-Coil or Time-Sert) is stronger than the original, ideal in aluminium.
- Cross-threaded — back the bolt all the way out, chase both threads, and always restart by hand.

Rounded or snapped fasteners
When the head won’t grip or the bolt has sheared off, switch tools — don’t keep slipping.
- Rounded head — clean it, try an exact-fit 6-point socket; if that slips, an extractor socket bites the rounded flats.
- Still slipping — locking pliers on a standing head, or weld a nut on for a fresh grip.
- Snapped with a stub — grip it with pliers or vise-grips and back it out with penetrant.

Galling, corrosion and loosening
