Kawasaki Engine Torque Specs

Kawasaki's FR, FS and FX V-twins are the engines under the hood of most commercial zero-turns and a huge share of residential riding mowers, alongside the FJ180V single on commercial walk-behinds and the FH series on older Toro/Exmark-era zero-turns. These torque specs are pulled… Read the rest ›

directly from Kawasaki's own 99924-series shop manuals -- not paraphrased from a parts blog -- so the head-bolt, flywheel, connecting-rod, and spark-plug numbers below match what a Kawasaki-trained tech would use on an FR691V, FX730V, FJ180V, or similar engine.

Where these numbers come from. 65 published figures, 4 confirmed gaps, every source named. How we checked ›

Every value below is quoted from an official Kawasaki 4-Stroke Air-Cooled V-Twin (or, for the FJ180V, single-cylinder) Service Manual bearing a 99924-xxxx document number -- the same manuals Kawasaki dealers use. Five separate manuals were consulted to cover the requested engines: 99924-2093-01 (FR651V-FR730V/FS651V-FS730V/FX651V-FX730V), 99924-2094-05 (FR541V/FR600V, FS481V-FS600V, FX481V-FX600V -- a 2013 5th-edition revision), 99924-2089-01 (FX751V/FX801V/FX850V), the FJ180V service manual (2002), and 99924-2078-01 (the FH451V-FH721V family). Two genuine document-revision conflicts turned up and are flagged inline: the FR541V/FR600V/FS/FX-481-600V family's rocker-arm-bracket-bolt torque was revised upward between the 2009 and 2013 editions of the same manual, and the FH601V/FH641V/FH661V/FH680V/FH721V connecting-rod bolt has two valid torques depending on which rod-bolt thread pitch (M6 vs M7) your specific engine uses -- Kawasaki's own chart does not map the two thread specs to individual model numbers. A commonly-repeated "36 ft-lb final / 18 ft-lb first pass" head-bolt figure and a "13 ft-lb" spark-plug figure, both seen elsewhere, were NOT found in any of the five official manuals consulted here and are flagged as unconfirmed/likely misattributed -- Kawasaki's own charts specify a single head-bolt torque plus a diagrammed (non-numeric) tightening sequence, and a single 22 N·m (16 ft-lb) spark-plug torque across every family checked.

All values from Kawasaki Service Manual Part No. 99924-2093-01 (1st Edition, Jan. More about this engine ›

9, 2009), which covers this exact 9-model set as one document. Kawasaki's own General Specifications table lists a single shared bore x stroke (78 x 76 mm) and piston displacement (726 cm3 / 44.3 cu in) across all nine model names in this manual rather than breaking it out per individual engine, so no single-engine displacement is asserted here rather than guessing one.

Fastener Torque Where it comes from
cylinder head bolt 34 ft-lbHigh⚠ sources disagree
46 N-m (4.7 kgf-m). Same for both the L=50mm and L=60mm head-bolt lengths used on this engine. Why › Kawasaki specifies ONE torque value plus a diagrammed tightening SEQUENCE (remarks code "S") -- not a two-stage numeric first-pass/final-pass torque. A commonly-repeated "18 ft-lb first pass / 36 ft-lb final" figure for Kawasaki small-engine head bolts does not appear in this manual (or any other Kawasaki small-engine manual consulted here) -- treat that figure as unconfirmed for this engine family.
connecting rod big end cap bolt 87 in-lb≈ 7.3 ft-lbHigh
9.8 N-m (1.0 kgf-m) -- approx. 7.2 ft-lb. Why › Apply engine oil to threads and seating surface before torquing (remarks code "EO"). This matches Kawasaki's published FX730V service data of "7.4 ft-lb (10 N-m)" -- 9.8 N-m/87 in-lb is the precise Kawasaki-published figure.
flywheel bolt 41 ft-lbHigh⚠ sources disagree
56 N-m (5.7 kgf-m). Matches Kawasaki's published 41 ft-lb (56 N-m) figure for the FR/FS/FX 651V-730V family -- an alternate "87 ft-lb"… Why › figure sometimes seen in automotive-context cross-reference tables is NOT supported by any Kawasaki small-engine manual consulted here and should be treated as wrong for this engine.
spark plug 16 ft-lbHigh⚠ sources disagree
22 N-m (2.2 kgf-m). NGK BPR4ES, gap 0.7-0.8 mm (0.028-0.031 in). Why › This is the figure printed in the OFFICIAL SERVICE MANUAL's torque table (not just an owner's manual paraphrase). An alternate "13 ft-lb (18 N-m)" figure seen elsewhere does not match anything in this or the other four Kawasaki manuals consulted here and is not used.
rocker arm bracket bolt 11 ft-lbHigh⚠ sources disagree
14.7 N-m (1.5 kgf-m) per this manual's only located edition (1st, Jan 2009, Part No. 99924-2093-01). Why › Apply non-permanent locking agent (remarks code "L"). CONFLICT NOTE: the sibling smaller-displacement Kawasaki manual (99924-2094, covering FR541V/FR600V/FS481-600V/FX481-600V) was revised for this identical fastener from 14.7 N-m/11 ft-lb (1st ed., 2009) up to 21 N-m/15 ft-lb (5th ed., 2013). No revised edition of THIS 99924-2093 manual was located to confirm whether the same running change applies to the 651V-730V family -- flagged pending a newer edition.
rocker cover bolt (valve cover) 52 in-lb≈ 4.3 ft-lbHigh 5.9 N-m (0.60 kgf-m). Tighten following the diagrammed sequence (remarks code "S").
crankcase cover bolt 20 ft-lbHigh 27.4 N-m (2.8 kgf-m). Sequence torque (remarks code "S").
engine oil drain plug 61 in-lb≈ 5.1 ft-lbHigh 6.9 N-m (0.70 kgf-m).
blower/fan housing bolt (cooling-system cleaning) (FR651V/FR691V/FR730V only — FS/FX owner's manuals not checked)M6 78 in-lb≈ 6.5 ft-lbHigh
8.8 N-m (0.9 kgf-m). From the FIRST-PARTY OWNER'S manual (Part No. 99920-2289-03, hosted directly on kawasakienginesusa.com, not a dealer… Why › mirror), not the service manual -- the two "C" and "D" fan-housing bolt callouts (M6x16mm and M6x22mm) share this one torque. That owner's manual covers the FR651V/FR691V/FR730V models specifically; the FS and FX owner's manuals for the same displacement class were not checked for this fastener, so do not assume it carries over without verifying.
carburetor and inlet pipe mounting bolt/nut 52 in-lb≈ 4.3 ft-lbHigh 5.9 N-m (0.60 kgf-m).
inlet manifold mounting bolt 52 in-lb≈ 4.3 ft-lbHigh 5.9 N-m (0.60 kgf-m). Sequence torque (remarks code "S").
valve clearance adjusting locknut 97 in-lb≈ 8.1 ft-lbMedium⚠ sources disagree
11 N-m (1.1 kgf-m) per the Torque and Locking Agent summary table. Why › The step-by-step procedure text elsewhere in the same manual restates this as "87 in-lb" in one spot; 11 N-m converts to 97 in-lb (not 87), so 97 in-lb is treated as correct and the "87" instance as a likely page-layout artifact (87 in-lb is also the connecting-rod-bolt figure on an adjacent line).
2 specs not published — oil filter (cartridge, full-flow), muffler / exhaust mount What we found ›
  • oil filter (cartridge, full-flow)GAP -- not a numeric torque spec on this family. Kawasaki's procedure: turn the filter until the gasket contacts the mounting surface, then turn it BY HAND an additional 3/4 turn -- no torque-wrench figure is published for this engine family (contrast with the FS481-600V and FX751-850V families below, which DO publish a numeric 11.8 N-m/104 in-lb filter torque).
  • muffler / exhaust mountGAP: no muffler or exhaust-flange torque value is listed anywhere in this manual for the FR/FS/FX 651V-730V family -- the muffler is equipment-manufacturer-supplied on these mower engines, not a Kawasaki-specified fastener.

56 N-m (5.7 kgf-m). DOCUMENT TYPO, not a real conflict: this manual reprints the identical "Torque - Flywheel Bolt: 56 N·m (5.7 kgf·m, ...)"… Why › instruction three times, once per starter/model variant, and two of the three reprints (pdf p.189, p.191) misprint the ft-lb column as "41 in-lb" instead of "41 ft-lb" -- 56 N·m converts to ~41.3 ft-lb, not 41 in-lb (which would be only ~4.6 N·m). The third reprint (pdf p.188) prints "41 ft-lb" correctly, and every other Kawasaki manual in this family agrees on 41 ft-lb, so that is the value used here.

Kawasaki FR691V head bolt torque SEQUENCE (and the rest of the FR/FS/FX 651V–730V family)

"Kawasaki FR691V head bolt torque sequence" is a common search because the torque table above gives ONE number — 46 N·m (34 ft-lb) — for all five head bolts, with no numeric two-stage pass. The actual instruction is "tighten following the tightening sequence as shown in the figure," and the figure is a diagram, not a number. This section draws that diagram out.

Kawasaki's manual (Part No. 99924-2093-01) prints TWO different numbering schemes for this fastener: a REMOVAL photo, used only for "loosen 1/4 turn in sequence," and a separate INSTALL drawing, which is the actual tightening order. Only the install order is shown below — using the removal photo's numbers to tighten would torque the bolts in the wrong sequence.

Cylinder head bolts (5-bolt head, 46 N·m / 34 ft-lb)

Per Kawasaki's install drawing (KE04045BS1): #1 cylinder — top row left-to-right 2, 4, 1; bottom row left-to-right 5, 3. #2 cylinder is drawn as a mirror image: top row 1, 4, 2; bottom row 3, 5. Tighten in that numeric order, bolt 1 first.

Kawasaki 5-bolt cylinder head tightening sequence for the FR/FS/FX 651V-730V family: cylinder 1 top row 2, 4, 1 and bottom row 5, 3; cylinder 2 mirrored, top row 1, 4, 2 and bottom row 3, 5.
Schematic redrawn from Kawasaki install drawing KE04045BS1 (99924-2093-01, p.87). Numbers are the bolt tightening order Kawasaki prints, not a literal trace of the manual's photo.

Rocker cover (valve cover) bolts (5.9 N·m / 52 in-lb)

Install order: top row 5, 2, bottom row 4, 1, 3 — a different order from the head bolts, and different from this same manual's own rocker-cover REMOVAL photo, which uses different numbers again. Confirmed identical on the 541V–600V family below (same manual family, different casting).

Kawasaki rocker cover bolt tightening sequence for the FR/FS/FX 651V-730V family: top row 5, 2 and bottom row 4, 1, 3.
Schematic redrawn from Kawasaki install photo KE04B132 (99924-2093-01, p.87).

Crankcase cover bolts (10-bolt, 27.4 N·m / 20 ft-lb)

Top row 7, 8, 9; upper-middle 1 (left) and 10 (right); lower-middle 6 (left) and 2 (right); bottom row 5, 4, 3.

Kawasaki's own caution: "Do not turn one screw down completely before the others, as it may cause the crankcase cover to warp" — bring every bolt down snug in order first, then repeat the sequence to final torque.

Kawasaki crankcase cover 10-bolt tightening sequence, shared by the 651V-730V and 541V-600V families: top row 7, 8, 9; sides 1 and 10, then 6 and 2; bottom row 5, 4, 3.

Cylinder head, rocker cover and crankcase cover SEQUENCE for the FR541V/FR600V and FS/FX 481V–600V family

This smaller-displacement family torques its head bolts to a lower 27.4 N·m (20 ft-lb) — not the 46 N·m/34 ft-lb above — but Kawasaki's own install drawing (KE04048BS1) draws the exact same bolt-numbering topology as the 651V–730V family, just on a different casting. The crankcase cover and rocker cover sequences are the same pattern too, confirmed by re-checking the actual manual photos, not just re-using the family above's diagram.

Also see the flywheel bolt row above for this family: two of the three places this manual reprints the 56 N·m flywheel-bolt instruction misprint "41 in-lb" where they mean "41 ft-lb" — a genuine Kawasaki document typo, not a lower real-world spec.

Cylinder head bolts (5-bolt head, 27.4 N·m / 20 ft-lb)

Identical numbering topology to the 651V–730V family: #1 cylinder top row 2, 4, 1, bottom row 5, 3; #2 cylinder mirrored, top row 1, 4, 2, bottom row 3, 5.

Kawasaki 5-bolt cylinder head tightening sequence, the same topology used by the FR/FS/FX 541V-600V family as the 651V-730V family above.
Schematic redrawn from Kawasaki install drawing KE04048BS1 (99924-2094-05, p.93) — same numbering as the 651V-730V family's KE04045BS1.

Rocker cover (valve cover) bolts (5.9 N·m / 52 in-lb)

Kawasaki's own manual prints this order too — "Tighten the rocker cover bolts following the tightening sequence as shown in the figure" (99924-2094-05, p.94, printed 5-10) — and photographs it separately per chassis: KE04B261 for FS/FX models, KE04B262 for FR models. Both draw the SAME order as the 651V-730V family above: top row 5, 2, bottom row 4, 1, 3. Not a gap after all — an earlier pass here missed the separate FS/FX and FR photos.

Kawasaki rocker cover bolt tightening sequence, confirmed identical for the FR/FS/FX 541V-600V family (KE04B261/262) and the 651V-730V family (KE04B132): top row 5, 2 and bottom row 4, 1, 3.
Schematic redrawn from Kawasaki install photos KE04B261 (FS/FX) and KE04B262 (FR) (99924-2094-05, p.94) — same order as KE04B132 above.

Crankcase cover bolts (10-bolt, 27.4 N·m / 20 ft-lb)

Same 10-bolt pattern as the 651V–730V family: top row 7, 8, 9; sides 1/10 then 6/2; bottom row 5, 4, 3. Same warp caution applies.

Kawasaki crankcase cover 10-bolt tightening sequence, identical pattern for the 541V-600V and 651V-730V families.

Cylinder head, rocker cover and crankcase cover SEQUENCE for the FX751V/FX801V/FX850V (6-bolt head)

This commercial-duty family uses a SIX-bolt cylinder head — the two families above use five — with its own head-bolt numbering. Do not reuse the 5-bolt head diagrams above on this family; the crankcase cover below, though, uses the same 3-2-2-3 bolt layout as the smaller families' pattern, just with different numbering.

Cylinder head bolts (6-bolt head, 46 N·m / 34 ft-lb)

Per Kawasaki's install photos (KE04B106 [A] / KE04B107 [B]), re-verified by zooming into the actual photos: #1 cylinder — top-center 6 (alone, above the valve gear), right-middle 1, left-middle 4, bottom-left 2, bottom-center 5, bottom-right 3. #2 cylinder mirrored: top-center 6, right-middle 4, left-middle 1, bottom-left 3, bottom-center 5, bottom-right 2. Bolts 1 and 4 sit at mid-height flanking the valve gear, not in a top row with 6.

Kawasaki's own printed note: "Install the washer to the third tightening bolt" — that is, whichever bolt you tighten THIRD in the sequence above (numbered 3 on both cylinders here) gets a washer the other five don't.

Kawasaki 6-bolt cylinder head tightening sequence for the FX751V/FX801V/FX850V family, with the third-tightened bolt on each cylinder circled for its required washer.

Rocker cover (valve cover) bolts (5.9 N·m / 52 in-lb)

Confirmed absent, not merely unfound: this family's manual gives only a generic "unscrew the rocker cover bolts [A], and remove the cover," with no numbered install order or diagram — unlike both smaller families above (which DO print one — see the 651V-730V and 541V-600V sections). Tighten evenly rather than guessing a sequence.

No numbered tightening sequence is printed for this fastener on this family.

Crankcase cover bolts (10-bolt, 46 N·m / 34 ft-lb — same layout as the smaller families, different numbering)

Top row 8, 9, 10; upper-middle 1 (left) and 2 (right); lower-middle 7 (left) and 3 (right) — no centre bolt in this row; bottom row 6, 5, 4. Same 3-2-2-3 bolt count and row shape as the 651V-730V/541V-600V pattern above, just different numbering — not a different physical layout.

Kawasaki crankcase cover 10-bolt tightening sequence for the FX751V-FX850V family, the same 3-2-2-3 bolt layout as the 651V-730V and 541V-600V families but different numbering.

What is the flywheel bolt torque on a Kawasaki FR691V, FX730V, or FH680V?

41 ft-lb (56 N·m) across every Kawasaki FR/FS/FX/FH V-twin manual referenced here (FJ180V single is lower, at 31 ft-lb/42 N·m). An alternate "87 ft-lb" figure seen in some parts-house cross-reference tables does not match any official Kawasaki small-engine service manual and should be treated as wrong.

What is the cylinder head bolt torque on a Kawasaki FX730V or FR691V?

34 ft-lb (46 N·m), applied as a single torque value following Kawasaki's diagrammed tightening sequence — not a two-stage "18 ft-lb then 36 ft-lb" pass. The smaller FR541V/FR600V/FS481-600V/FX481-600V family uses a lower 20 ft-lb (27.4 N·m), and the FH-series V-twins use 19 ft-lb (25 N·m) — always match the number to your exact engine family, since Kawasaki does not use one head-bolt torque across the whole line.

Why is the connecting rod bolt torque so low on some Kawasaki V-twins?

On the FR/FS/FX 651V-730V family and the FH541V/FH580V/FH601V (M6-thread) engines, Kawasaki's own manual specifies just 9.8 N·m (87 in-lb, about 7.2 ft-lb) for the connecting rod big-end cap bolts — genuinely low, not a typo. The larger-displacement FX801V/FX850V commercial engines step up to 20.6 N·m (15.2 ft-lb) for a bigger rod bolt, so don't cross-apply figures between engine families.

What spark plug torque does a Kawasaki small engine use?

22 N·m (16 ft-lb) is the figure in every Kawasaki FR/FS/FX/FJ/FH service manual referenced here, using an NGK BPR4ES plug gapped 0.7–0.8 mm. A lower "13 ft-lb" figure sometimes cited elsewhere does not appear in any of these manuals.

Do FR, FS, and FX Kawasaki engines of the same displacement use the same torque specs?

Mostly yes — an FR691V, FS691V, and FX691V share one Kawasaki manual and nearly identical fastener torques, since they're the same core engine architecture with different carburetor/air-cleaner/starter configurations. A few secondary bolts do differ by chassis type within the same chart (for example, intake manifold bolts torque differently on FR models vs. FS/FX models) — check the component name in the table for any "(FR Models)" / "(FS and FX Models)" qualifier.

What torque should I use on an FH601V or FH680V connecting rod bolt?

Kawasaki's own FH601V-FH721V service manual lists two different values — 21 N·m (15 ft-lb) for an M7×1.0-thread rod bolt, or 9.8 N·m (87 in-lb) for an M6×1.0-thread rod bolt — without stating which specific model uses which. Measure the actual thread pitch on your rod bolt before torquing rather than guessing.
