Kohler Engine Torque Specs

Kohler powers a huge share of riding mowers, zero-turns, and portable generators through a handful of well-known families — the single-cylinder Command PRO CH395/CH440, the different, older-platform Command CH11-16 and CV11-16 singles, the CH/CV V-Twins that show up as CH640… Read the rest ›

CH680, CV730, CV740 on riding-mower decals, the newer 7000 Series (KT715-KT745), and the older Courage SV470-SV620 line. The torque values below are pulled directly from Kohler's own service manual PDFs (not paraphrased from a parts blog), so head-bolt sequences, flywheel-nut, connecting-rod, and spark-plug numbers match what a Kohler-trained tech would use — and they're split by family because Kohler's own tables show the numbers are NOT interchangeable across CH11-16, CH440, CH730/CV730, KT725, and SV540, even though several look similar at a glance or overlap in horsepower.

Where these numbers come from. 166 published figures, 9 confirmed gaps, every source named. How we checked ›

Every family below has its own official Kohler service manual, hosted directly on resources.kohler.com: form 17 690 01 (CH245-CH440) for the CH395/CH440 singles, form TP-2402-A (CH11-CH16) for the different, older-platform Command CH11-16 horizontal-crankshaft singles, form TP-2339-D (CV11-CV16/CV460-495) for the vertical-crankshaft CV11-16 companion, form 24 690 06 (CH18-CH25/CH620-CH750) for the Command CH V-Twin, form 24 690 07 (CV17-CV25/CV620-CV750) for the Command CV V-Twin, form 32 690 03 (KT610-KT745) for the 7000 Series, and form 20 690 01 (SV470-SV620) for Courage. CH11-16 and CV11-16 are a genuinely different, older platform from CH395/CH440 and from the CH620-750/CV620-750 V-Twins — CH11-14 displaces 398 cc and CH15/16 displaces 426 cc, close to CH440's 429 cc, but none of the fastener values transfer between the three families. Several real discrepancies surfaced during sourcing rather than being silently resolved: (1) the CH V-Twin manual lists the rocker arm silver screw at 105 in-lb while the otherwise-identical CV V-Twin manual lists the same M6x1.0x45 screw at 120 in-lb; (2) an older revision of the CH395/CH440 manual (Rev. D, 2011) lists the oil drain plug at 23 N·m versus the current Rev. L's 18 N·m; (3) CH11-16's own manual is internally inconsistent about which hole condition (new vs. used) gets the higher ignition-module fastener torque — see that row; (4) CH11-16's charging stator mounting screw is 6.2 N·m (55 in-lb) in the Section 1 spec table but 4.0 N·m in the Section 11 reassembly procedure, which also mislabels that figure "ft. lb." instead of "in. lb." — see that row. All are kept and flagged rather than picking one. Also worth knowing: the CH11-16/CV11-16 singles are the one Kohler family here where spark-plug torque is NOT identical across CH and CV — CH11-16 specifies 38.0-43.4 N·m (28-32 ft-lb) versus CV11-16's 24.4-29.8 N·m (18-22 ft-lb), a ~45% gap for the same RC12YC plug — while every larger Kohler family (CH395/CH440, the V-Twins, 7000 Series, Courage SV) uses the identical 27 N·m (20 ft-lb) spark-plug torque. The Courage SV head-bolt final torque (41.0 N·m / 360 in-lb) is also noticeably lower than the CH/CV V-Twin and 7000 Series bolt-variant head bolt (41.8 N·m / 370 in-lb) — don't cross-apply Command's head-bolt numbers to a Courage SV engine, whose manual also makes the head screws and gasket one-time-use. • muffler exhaust screwGAP: the manual's Muffler Exhaust Screw row is split into an M8 column (24 N·m/212 in-lb) and an M10 column (35 N·m/310 in-lb), but the manual's table doesn't unambiguously assign the M8 vs M10 column to the CH395 specifically (M10/35 N·m is confirmed for CH440 — see that engine's row). No CH395-specific number is asserted without a clearer copy of the source table.
  • oil filterGAP: no oil filter torque spec located for CH395 in Kohler's manual for this engine (only "refer to instructions on oil filter" language elsewhere in Kohler's docs for this era).

Every value below was checked directly against the manual's own torque table (4 match Kohler's previously-published figures exactly, 1 — the rocker arm silver screw — turned out to be CV-specific rather than universal; see that row).

Fastener Torque Where it comes from

New hardware every time: the manual says to lightly oil the exposed (upper) stud threads, then "install a new flat washer and nut onto each mounting stud." Kohler also notes that heads are machined differently for studs than for screws, so the fastening method cannot be altered unless the heads are replaced, and components must not be intermixed — use the variant your head was built for.

A commonly-repeated 200/370 in-lb head-bolt figure for the "SV series" generically does not appear in this manual's actual text (180/360 in-lb) and is not used here — it appears to be a Command-family number misattributed to Courage.

Kohler's general torque-by-thread-size table (M4 1.2 N·m/11 in-lb up to M14 58.3-219.7 N·m/43-162 ft-lb across property classes 4.8-12.9) and its oil-drain-plug-by-thread table (1/8" NPT 4.5 N·m into aluminum only; 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" tabled separately for cast iron vs. aluminum) cover any fastener without its own row below and without its own page-cited procedure; the crankcase oil drain plug DOES have an engine-specific figure from the "Change Oil" procedure (see that row) even though it is not in the Section 1 spec table. No distinct carburetor-mounting-screw torque is printed (see that GAP row), but the carburetor adapter and cylinder-head baffle screws do have their own rows below. Head bolts use a 5-position pattern (Fig. 11-35, identical layout to CV11-16's Fig. 11-44): position 1 (left-centre, nearest the high-temp cutout switch/long 90mm bolt) is torqued first, then 2 (top-right), 3 (bottom-left), 4 (top-left), 5 (bottom-right, between the intake/exhaust ports) — Figure 11-35 is captioned "Cylinder Head Fastener Torque Sequence" and its five numbered positions ARE the tightening order. New head bolts are required every time a head is installed. Verified 2026-09-19.

Fastener Torque Where it comes from
cylinder head bolt (2-stage) 36 ft-lbHigh
Final stage 48.9 N·m (36 ft-lb); initial stage 24 N·m (18 ft-lb). Why › "Following the sequence in Figure 11-35, torque the bolts to 24 N·m (18 ft. lb.). Then repeat the sequence to a final torque of 48.9 N·m (36 ft. lb.)." Sequence (Fig. 11-35, same 5-position layout as CV11-16's Fig. 11-44): 1 (left-centre, hi-temp cutout switch/long 90mm bolt) first, then 2 (top-right), 3 (bottom-left), 4 (top-left), 5 (bottom-right, between intake/exhaust ports). New head bolts should always be used. No Loctite thread-sealant step is called out for CH11-16 head bolts (contrast CV11-16 below, whose manual explicitly calls for Loctite 59241 on the two head bolts at positions 3 and 4 only).

Noticeably higher than the CV11-16 spark-plug torque below (24.4-29.8 N·m / 18-22 ft-lb) for what is nominally the same plug — a real, quoted platform difference, not a typo.

oil filter adapter fastener 100 in-lb≈ 8.3 ft-lbHigh
11.3 N·m, as printed by Kohler. The spin-on oil filter itself has no numeric torque — Kohler's instruction is "3/4-1 turn after gasket… Why › contacts," not a torque-wrench figure.

CONFLICT: the Section 1 spec table (p.1.8) prints "Stator Mounting Screw Torque .... Why › 6.2 N·m (55 in. lb.)." The Section 11 reassembly procedure (p.11.8, "Install Stator and Wiring Harness" step 3) prints a different figure for the same fastener: "Torque the screws to 4.0 N·m (35 ft. lb.)." That procedure line also has its own internal unit error — 4.0 N·m converts to roughly 35 in-lb, not 35 ft-lb, so "ft. lb." there is very likely a misprint for "in. lb." Both passages are genuinely printed in TP-2402-A; the 55 in-lb spec-table figure is shown as the primary value here because it does not carry the apparent unit typo, but the 4.0 N·m procedure figure is quoted in full rather than silently dropped.

CONFLICT: Kohler's own spec table prints "4.0 N·m (35 in. lb.) into new holes / 6.2 N·m (55 in. lb.) into used holes" (new hole LOWER than… Why › used hole), but the separate reassembly procedure a few pages later says "First Time Installation On A New Short Block: 6.2 N·m (55 in. lb.). All Reinstallations: 4.0 N·m (35 in. lb.)" (new short block HIGHER). Both figures are genuinely printed in TP-2402-A; which hole condition maps to which value is internally inconsistent in the manual itself, so no direction is asserted here — use 35-55 in-lb and match to whichever of the two Kohler passages applies to your job.

The starter-side and intake-side cylinder baffles (Fig. 11-40, 11-41) and the blower housing itself are NOT given a torque -- p.11.13 step 4 says only "tighten all other mounting hardware securely," no figure.

carburetor throttle plate retaining screws 8–12 in-lbHigh
0.9-1.4 N·m. Carburetor rebuild fastener, not a carb-to-engine mounting screw: "Install the throttle plate to the throttle shaft... Why › Apply Loctite No. 609 to the threads of the throttle plate retaining screws... Torque the screws to 0.9-1.4 N·m (8-12 in. lb.)." What is the head bolt torque on a Kohler CH440 or CV730?

The Command PRO CH440 single uses a 2-stage sequence up to 57.5 N·m (509 in-lb, ~42 ft-lb). The Command V-Twins (CH640, CH730, CH740, CV640, CV730, CV740) use a different sequence — 22.6→41.8 N·m (200→370 in-lb, ~31 ft-lb final) for the bolt variant, or 16.9→35.5 N·m (150→315 in-lb, ~26 ft-lb final) for the nut variant with a new flat washer and nut on every stud, depending which hardware your engine uses — Kohler machines the heads for one or the other, so the two cannot be swapped. Do not mix the CH440 single-cylinder number with the V-Twin number — they are different platforms with different final torques.

What is the flywheel nut torque on a Kohler CH730 or CV730?

49 ft-lb (66.4 N·m), per Kohler's own Command V-Twin service manuals. That is different from the 7000 Series (KT715-KT745), which torques its flywheel screw to 55 ft-lb (74.5 N·m), and from the CH395/CH440 singles, which use a much higher 83 ft-lb (113 N·m) flywheel nut. Always use a flywheel holding tool, not an impact gun.

Do Kohler CH and CV V-Twins use identical torque specs?

Almost — but not quite. Kohler's own CH and CV service manuals match on every major fastener (head bolt, rod bolt, flywheel, spark plug) except one: the rocker arm "silver screw" (M6x1.0x45) torques to 105 in-lb per the CH manual but 120 in-lb per the CV manual, for what is otherwise the identical part. Match the number to your engine's actual CH or CV code, not just "V-twin."

What spark plug torque does Kohler use across its small engines?

27 N·m / 20 ft-lb — and it is the one number that is identical across every Kohler family we sourced: the CH395/CH440 singles, the CH/CV V-Twins (CH640, CH730, CV730, etc.), the 7000 Series (KT715-KT745), and the older Courage SV470-SV620. It is one of the few Kohler torque values you can trust across the whole lineup.

Is the Kohler Courage SV540 head bolt torque the same as a Command engine?

No. Courage SV470-SV620 tops out at 41.0 N·m (360 in-lb, ~30 ft-lb) on the final head-bolt stage, per Kohler's own SV service manual — a bit lower than the Command CH/CV V-Twin bolt variant's 41.8 N·m (370 in-lb). They are close enough to cause mix-ups, so check your engine code (SV vs CH/CV) before torquing. Courage SV head screws and the head gasket are also one-time-use — Kohler's SV manual says never to reuse them.

Where do these Kohler torque numbers come from?

Directly from Kohler's own service manual PDFs, hosted on resources.kohler.com: form 17 690 01 (CH245-CH440), TP-2402-A (CH11-CH16), TP-2339-D (CV11-CV16/CV460-495), 24 690 06 (CH18-CH25/CH620-CH750), 24 690 07 (CV17-CV25/CV620-CV750), 32 690 03 (KT610-KT745), and 20 690 01 (SV470-SV620) — not paraphrased from a parts-house blog. Where Kohler's own documents disagreed with each other (the CH-vs-CV rocker screw, an old vs. current CH440 oil-drain-plug revision, CH11-16's internally-inconsistent ignition-module row), both values are shown rather than silently picking one.

What is the head bolt torque on a Kohler CH11-16 or CV11-16?

CH11-16 (horizontal crankshaft) torques its 5-position head-bolt pattern to 24 N·m (18 ft-lb) first, then a final pass to 48.9 N·m (36 ft-lb). CV11-16 (vertical crankshaft) uses a lower sequence: 20 N·m (15 ft-lb) initial, 40.7 N·m (30 ft-lb) final — a genuine platform difference, not a typo, per Kohler's own TP-2402-A and TP-2339-D service manuals. New head bolts are required every time on both. CV11-16 has one extra step CH11-16 does not: Loctite® 59241 thread sealant on the two head bolts at positions 3 and 4.

What torque do I use on a Kohler CH11-16 or CV11-16 connecting rod?

Both engines use the same three rod-bolt variants and the same figures: 6mm straight-shank bolt 11.3 N·m (100 in-lb), 8mm straight-shank bolt 22.6-22.7 N·m (200 in-lb), and 8mm step-down bolt 14.7 N·m (130 in-lb). Check which shank type is actually on your rod before torquing — the three variants are not interchangeable figures.

Do the Kohler CH11-16 and CV11-16 spark plugs torque the same?

No — this is the one Kohler family in this dataset where CH and CV genuinely differ. CH11-16 specifies 38.0-43.4 N·m (28-32 ft-lb); CV11-16 specifies 24.4-29.8 N·m (18-22 ft-lb), roughly 45% lower, for the nominally identical RC12YC plug. Every other Kohler family covered here (CH395/CH440, the CH/CV V-Twins, 7000 Series, Courage SV) uses the same 27 N·m (20 ft-lb) figure across the board — CH11-16/CV11-16 is the exception.
